Cast & Crew Bios - Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?   Show Pictures  Director's Notes

Bruce Revennaugh (Father O'Reilly)
Lucille Morosco (Secretary, Sister) - After my first play in high school, I was hooked on theater! The next twenty years were spent raising seven children and educating them in Catholic schools. All of my life I have been involved with music, first with my father as a young girl, and then as adult, singing in various groups. I have been involved with the follies for nineteen years, The Silver Threads, Greater Zanesville Singers, church choirs and theater. This play has been especially fun, reliving old memories!
Martha Staley (Sister Lee)  turns another page in her life as her son Aaron goes to college this fall. She spends her free time baking, singing, and participating in the theatre. Martha auditioned for this show because she had heard how funny the script was to read. She looks forward to participating in ZCT's upcoming
Angel Tree benefit, and hopes you enjoy the show.
Kay Denbow (Sister Helen) Although she hasn't acted in a play for many years, Kay has spent 35 years in the role of first grade teacher, 32 years in the role of mother to two children, Susan and Patrick, and 37 years in the role of wife to husband Larry Denbow, a teacher at Bishop Rosecrans High School. Her singing experience encompasses 35 years as a member of the St.Nicholas Traditional Choir, 5 years in the St. Nicholas Praise Band, and two years with the Greater Zanesville Singers when they first organized under the direction of Mr. Glenville Thomas. She also sang in the choir at First Christian Church in her early years. She is currently studying voice with Mrs. Susan Davis. "I am looking forward to bringing to life the character of Sr. Helen and am honored to be part of this very talented cast! I hope you all enjoy the show and take home many fun memories and lots of chuckles!"
Darla Revennaugh (Sister Monica Marie) is part of ZCT’s woodwork – dust and all. She has been involved in many productions both on and off stage. Some of her roles include Miss Wysteria in Ladies of the Sacred South, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, Rheba in You Can’t Take It With You, Maggie in Jake’s Women, and Domina in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She also often wears the hats of musical director, stage manager, and chief rest room cleaner. Darla invites you to let the music take you back to your own school days – to those fun, and the not-so-fun days when life seemed simpler. Enjoy the show!

Donna Horton (Sister Melanie)  is the mother of 6, and grandmother of 10. She has done local theatre for 25 years. Donna's most memorable roles include Mrs. Shinn in The Music Man at Secrest, and Golda in Fiddler on the Roof at Zane Trace Players. She has participated in Zaney Follies for 18 years, and in ZCT's Angel Tree benefit. Donna is also a member of Greater Zanesville Singers. She's having a great time working with this talented cast.

  Students
Sean McClure (Eddie Ryan)
Jillian Von Gunten (Becky Bakowski, Choreographer) – Jillian has been involved in theatre for most of her life and considers ZCT to be an extension of her home. In addition to numerous onstage and backstage roles, Jillian serves as ZCT’s President of the Board of Directors. Jillian is currently a Theatre and Political Science double major and an English and History double minor at Muskingum College (if you know her it makes perfect sense, if you don’t it probably sounds a little bizarre). She is also the proud product of fifteen years of Catholic education (that’s 2 years of preschool, elementary, and high school if the math puzzles you). This show provides a wonderful opportunity to combine theatre which is so important to her and her Catholic education which helped shape her into the person she is today (for better or worse). She feels blessed to have both in her life. Shoes is a humorous, endearing stroll down memory lane.
Kevin McCarthy (Felix Lindor) Though Felix lusts over Mary's anatomy, and longs to dance too close to Virginia, his heart will always belong to Nancy! Kevin hopes you will enjoy the show, whether it's a trip down Memory Lane or your first day in Catholic school.
Ashley Eaves (Virginia Lear) is a junior at Bethel College , Indiana , majoring in Theatre Arts. She loves to be to be in the spotlight as well as backstage and has had the opportunity to work on many shows here, including: Charlotte’s Web, 84 Charing Cross Road , Working, Grace & Glorie, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, and Fiddler on the Roof. At school she’s taken on many roles as well, assistant stage managing (Charlie’s Aunt), sound assistant (Peter Pan), actress (The Miracle Worker and Guys and Dolls), and make-up designer (The Foreigner and Shadowlands). In the spring, she received an award from Bethel for her work on The Foreigner. This summer she has spent volunteering with a children’s ministry called Superkids, working part-time at Ditty’s Downtown Deli, and part-time as a nanny for a local family. As much as she has enjoyed being back in Ohio for the summer, she is looking forward to starting classes again in a few weeks. She would like to thank her friends and family for all their support in the midst of her crazy schedule this summer, and a special thanks to Gram and Papa for always believing in her, no matter what she does.
Kevin Lucas (Mike Depki) is a full time college student at Zane State College, and is currently working on a triple major: Object-oriented programming, Interactive digital-media, and e-commerce. He has been involved in music and drama in the past, but this is his first involvement with Zanesville Community Theatre. He would like to thank Melanie for giving him a chance to play such a fun part, and the cast and crew for making him feel welcomed. “I hope you enjoy the show as much as I have enjoyed being in it. And I look forward to many great future shows with this wonderful group of people.”
Dee McCarthy (Nancy Ralansky) Second grade---the sound of a ruler cracking over my knuckles and breaking in half for talking too much---Who, me? A cradle Catholic, Catholic education led me to my true love, and memories far gentler and kinder. Nancy is sooo fun to play! Seuss' Sour Kangaroo might be a tie. Thanks, ZCT, for all the fun opportunities to sing and act. Thanks to my hubby Kevin, and daughters Maddy, Sadie, & Mia for supporting me in rehearsals and singing show songs in the van over and over.
Eric Blake  (Louie Schlang) This show is an opportunity for each one of us to reflect on our youth and growing up, regardless of whether you grew up in the “Publics” or the “Catholics”. I hope you enjoy the show and are able to “reminisce without regret” your own school days and are able to remember them fondly.

I have been involved in theatre for many years (since high school, so you do the math). I love being involved either on stage or working behind the scenes. It was instilled in me at an early age that it is just as important to know set construction and other technical aspects of theatre as well as developing acting skills. I have been involved with ZCT for several years where I am currently a member of the Board of Directors. I feel that it is so important to give back to our community, and being involved with ZCT affords me that opportunity whether by nurturing young talent and providing them a safe place to learn and have a good time or by fund raising to help provide a
much needed boost to those in need at the Holiday Season.
Andrea Schmitt (Mary Kenny) - I, being a Catholic, fully enjoy this show. It shows the truth of we catholic students in a way that can be described in one word...hysterical. I have been in theatre a little over a year, but this play is by far the funniest! I hope the audience enjoys the show as much as I have.

Production Staff

Melanie Von Gunten (Director) Melanie and her long suffering husband Dan are part of the “old guard” at Zanesville Community Theatre, having been involved since 1977. In fact, daughter Jillian grew up in the Theatre and thought for a long time that the building was the west wing of her home. Now Jillian has been serving as the president of ZCT. Talk about feeling old! Melanie has served in nearly every capacity backstage for productions, except choreography ( that’s why Jillian took dancing) and lighting (again, something to do with coordination). Occasionally, she may be found on stage. Most often, she can be found at the hair station backstage doing “hair magic”.

Director's Notes: This is Melanie’s fifth journey into directing at ZCT, although this is her first attempt at directing a musical. Previously, she has directed The Mousetrap, Ten Little Indians, Blithe Spirit, and Ladies of the Sacred South. Melanie was approached by Susan Davis, musical director about working on “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?”  As a Catholic Christian who grew up in the fifties and early sixties, Melanie remembers her upbringing in the Church and her experiences in parochial school with great affection. The Dominican Sisters who taught her helped her realize her potential to become the person she is today. Their devotion to their students was unsurpassed.

A few years ago, Melanie was fortunate enough to work with one of the dear sisters that had been one of her English teachers. Sister Teresa would threaten to go back and remove the A’s she had given her in English if she stepped out of line. This was clearly spoken in jest. The time period for “Shoes” reminds us of a kinder, gentler, but more disciplined time in our history. The characters in “Shoes” reminds Melanie of some of the “ladies” that taught in parochial schools around the world, where their former students still hold them in great affection. Melanie hopes that these characters will endear themselves to you, and you will hold them in great affection, too, and adds that you do not have to be Catholic or Christian to enjoy this production. It is a production that has to do with being formed by those that care about you...about the struggles one has as he or she comes of age...and the sense of belonging.
